EU Council President: EU Summit Stressed Commitment to Political Solution to Crisis in Syria

BRUSSELS, (SANA) – President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said on Wednesday that the leaders of the European Union discussed the situation in Syria, but they made no decision on lifting the arms ban on it.

Concluding the EU Summit in Brussels, Van Rompuy added, "We stressed commitment to political solution to the Syrian crisis, and we welcomed the initiative for holding an international conference in Geneva."

During a press conference after the EU Summit, Rompuy said, "the EU leaders have commissioned their foreign ministers to prepare for the international conference on Syria and to make a decision in general on the sanctions imposed on Syria as the current sanctions will expire by June 1st."
