Lavrov Underlines Importance of Launching Comprehensive Political Dialogue in Syria

MOSCOW, (SANA)_Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, stressed the importance of an immediate halt to violence and ending the suffering of the Syrian people, and initiating a Syrian comprehensive political dialogue to solve the crisis.

In a statement on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov discussed with Chairman of the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt in Moscow the situation in Syria under the negative consequences of the armed conflict on the region's countries.

The statement added that Lavrov reiterated his firm support to the sovereignty, independence and safety of the Lebanese territories and all countries of the region, renewing call for solving internal crises through peaceful means away from foreign interference and foreign-imposed recipes.

Bogdanov Affirms Russia's Firm Stance on Solution in Syria through Comprehensive Dialogue

The Russian President's Special Envoy to the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, stressed that the Russian principled stance on the crisis in Syria is firm in terms of finding a solution that is based on dialogue and the principles agreed on in Geneva Declaration.

Bogdanov's stress came during a meeting with a delegation of the People's Assembly chaired by Head of the Press, Printing and Publishing Committee, Fayez al-Sayegh, in Moscow, in the presence of the Syrian Ambassador to Russia, Riyad Haddad.

"Russia is committed to its principled and firm stance that is based on solving the crisis in Syria through comprehensive dialogue among all the parties involved in it and on the basis of the principles agreed on in Geneva Declaration of the action group issued on June 30 of last year," said Bogdanov.

He highlighted the Russian efforts seeking to unify the international stances around finding a solution to the crisis in Syria by peaceful means, pointing out to the difficulties Moscow is faced with in this regard.

"A dirty attack is launched against Syria in the media, particularly the Western media, and Syria's enemies are making use of the advanced media in this battle," said the Russian diplomat.

He explained that some Arab and Western media outlets tend to distort the reality of the Russian stance towards Syria and falsify the Russian leadership's statements in this regard.
Bogdanov stressed the need to bolster the bilateral relations through the meetings between the Russian and Syrian delegations, saying such meetings and contacts help to clarify the stances further.

He noted that the visit of the People's Assembly delegation comes in the framework of activating the parliamentary, diplomatic and popular relations between both sides and developing contacts on the various levels between the representatives of the public opinion in Syria and Russia.

For his part, al-Sayegh highlighted the constructive role played by Russia regarding the situation in Syria, stressing that what is going on in Syria is not a sectarian or civil war but rather a war waged against it through misleading media and the continuous flow of money.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced in this context that there was an extensive exchange of views during the meeting with the focus placed on the main issues that are related to the emerging situation in Syria and others that have to do with developing the Syrian-Russian communication.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Ministry said a common understanding was expressed towards the necessity to halting violence in Syria and overcoming the crisis in it through political means only and in accordance with Geneva Declaration.
